Hi Team!
It’s time for our weekly blog post.
This week at our Enoggera gym we have been working on passing and retaining our guard in BJJ. That is to say, keeping our legs between us and our opponent. A seemingly simple concept, it turns rather more complex in practice as unfortunately our opponent is also trying to do BJJ. In my experience, they do this really annoying thing called ‘moving’, instead of just lying there and letting me win. Even more insultingly, they themselves often go beyond simply doing BJJ back, and delve into the realm of trying to win instead of me. Honestly, the gall of it is shocking, to say the least.
In any case, as a result, the best way to approach passing the guard is through the use of heavy pressure technique. This style of passing helps to mitigate your opponent’s skill and movement and instead forces them to carry your weight. Over time, this wears them out and ultimately makes it far easier to beat them in the later stages of the match. You might also have heard this concept referred to as “cooking” your opponent.
It doesn’t matter how large or small you or your opponent is, you should always be trying to use pressure technique. It’s simply the most effective way of winning a match.
Be sure to come in for stellar lessons on how to approach this concept in a live roll!
